Tour no. 2 – Galilee through Christian eyes
Nazareth – The Church of Annunciation
Nazareth is the town where the angel Gabriel announced that Mary will bear a son. This is where Jesus spent most of his life. He was raised here and worked with his father as a carpenter. When he tried to preach he was forced to leave and fled to the Sea of Galilee. In this tour you will visit one of the three most important churches in the Holy Land, the Church of Annunciation, which is built upon the area of ancient Nazareth and the House of Mary.
At the Sea of Galilee
Capernaum
The town of Capernaum was the first place Jesus stayed while he left his home town of Nazareth and came to the Sea of Galilee. During your visit you will see within the remains of the ancient city of Capernaum the house of St. Peter where Jesus lived and the Synagogue where he preached.
The Church of Multiplication of Loaves
In a place call Tabgha or Heptapegon on the shore of the Sea of Galilee is located a beautiful church which is built upon the site where it is believed Jesus performed his miracle of feeding the multitude with loaves and fishes.
The Church of Primacy
By the shore of the Sea of Galilee, right next to the water, in a lush, verdant site, there is a chapel - “Mensa Domini” - named after the place where Jesus prepared the meal to his disciples. It was here that he transferred the leadership to St. Peter when he thrice told him “Feed my sheep.”
Mount of the Beatitudes
From the mount, you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Sea of Galilee. Here, there is a unique octagonal chapel whose shape symbolizes the eight beatitudes declared by Jesus during his Sermon on the Mount. In a large peaceful garden, full of trees and flowers, you can draw inspiration from the area where Jesus spent the last few years of his life.
Yardenit – The Baptismal Site on the Jordan River
At the southern tip of the Sea of Galilee, from which the Jordan River emanates, there is an access site which provides visitors with the opportunity to reach the water. Here you can participate in a baptism ritual or take some of the water as a memory from the Holy Land.
Boat Ride on the Sea of Galilee
During your tour around the Sea of Galilee you will have the opportunity to experience a boat ride on the lake and enjoy a view of the places where Jesus and his disciples lived 2000 years ago.
